.gif animated images. Download the free trial of Adobe Photoshop and look up ".gif animated images with photoshop" or something.

I think .gif images are too large (around 2 mb) to put for your avatar, though some people get away with it.

Huh. I never knew that. Are you sure?... My last 2 avatars were both animated .gif and I had no problem uploading them.
