Importing Custom Scenery - ChasR8793 - Mar 16, 2014

Ok, so I have gone back to sketchup 8 and/or 2013. Have created custom scenery with both of them and attempted to import them, I have followed multiple video instructions to a tee and none of my scenery shows up in the game. Can someone please tell me what I might be doing wrong or provide me with a link to better instruction videos?

You have written you’ve tried following multiple sets of instructions so that’s always a good start. For custom scenery creation it seems it’s not a good idea to rely on a single tutorial.

I’m afraid all the tutorials and videos seem to skim around various bits of the process. I’m sure the authors don’t mean it to be this way. Regardless of how well intentioned the tutorial or video might be, it’s just that it’s difficult for someone to make notes of every step in every process when they already know how.

For yourself, it’s a matter of analyzing the information you do have and trying to do it several times. There are so many options available and stages required for creating CS and anything can go wrong if the entire process is not executed perfectly – yes, perfectly.

For the time being, disregard making pieces that are colorable or animated. Forget about making multi-part sets or multi-textured parts. Ignore whether you want the texture map to be on one side or both sides of the poly. And for now don’t worry about adding billboards, what size you want the finished item to show in the game or where on the tile you want it to place.

Start by trying to create a single item with a single texture and simply see if you can get it into the game. Once you have done that make your own notes and then follow your own notes exactly each time. After this examine the various features of the importer to see if there is something that suddenly makes sense where it didn’t before.

Then try a single colorable piece, or a single animated piece.

Next try the more complicated stuff. And always update your notes.

I myself have tried creating a single piece with a single random texture and it took me two tries to get it into the game. Since then I haven’t really put my head to the task. When I get around to to it again I know I'll need to take baby steps to make any more progress.
