In 1776, the founding fathers of the United States, were tired of being overly taxed, without representation in the kindom of Great Britain. The US wan't getting the support it needed from the king back then, so we rebelled. (Good thing we're on excellent terms today.)

Thus, the American Revolution took place. The Decloration of independance severed the ties from the British. We formed our own nation. A bloody battle ensued. People made great sacrifices. This is why the Fourth of July is also called "Independance Day". It was the day we became independant, as in... not "dependant"... on Great Britain.
