I've always sucked at these games, does anyone have a tips for me?

try building coasters that have the same elements as the ones at your nearest theme park and try not to make them unrealistically long. Also use the terrain tool it never looks nice to have box holes. Try using custom scenery it provides a wider range of stuff to use to build from.

On goldrush, when I level the land everything I build is elevated off the ground

hold shift and move the mouse up or down to move objects lower or higher.

Do I just hold shift then click on a object to move it up or down?

you can only do it when placing an object.

When I try to put an object on the ground after flattening the land it automatically gets put on a platform that's elevated above the ground. i don't think holding shift would do anything will it?

Update: I fixed the problem I was having.
