Help with driver updates

#1
WARNING long post

Ok I know my pc isnt great but I havnt updated it scine I had it about 3 months ago apart from through windows automatic updates. So can someone tell me and post me links to updates for my graphics, sound and motherboard drivers ect. This would be a great help. Also for some reason it says that I only have 512 mb worth of memory. I know this is wrong as I have 2x 512 mb in my motherboard slots. And lastly I was thinking of building a new pc in a few months, so what would you recomend for specs, graphics, motherboard, cpu ect
And what would be your thoughts on it being water cooled or fan cooled? Id use the pc for mainly the internet and rct3 and also playing flight sim ect (dont laugh..im a sim freak lol)
Thanks in advance
shaun

Dude, loose the Sempron CPU and the GeForce 4 MX, both are budget products, and the latter, is very old now, almost an antique in the graphics card world. You're also using an integregated sound chip, so even more performance problems. So, next time you get a new PC, do it right Smile

Here goes my recomendations. As you haven't set a budget, i'll just list what my next build is likley to have in it...

CPU: AMD Athlon 64, without fail. AMD have been faster than Intel for a while now. Single core or dual core I hear you cry? That depends on what you use your PC for. dual core works well for running multiple programs at once, but dont give that much of a performance boost to games, unless you buy the ultra top ones @ £700 each. So single core offering: AMD Athlon 64 3800+, and if you can stretch to it, Dual Core Athlon 64 X2 4400.

Motherboard: Anything with Nvidia N-Force 4, moving on...

Graphics: Nvidia has once again come out faster than ATI this time round. The best card atm in the price vs performance catagory is the Nvidia GeForce 7800GT. But i've alwas been an ATI fan, and would prolly buy the X1800XT if budget allows (As it's more like a 7800 GTX). It's about 5% slower than Nvidia's rival, but 30% cheaper. Another thing to say here is, don't hold back on your graphics card purchace. Trimming the pennies here will see you having to upgrade sooner than expected. Buy something top spec now, and it will see you clear for a good 18-24 months.

Sound: Creative Soundblaster XF-I Extreme Music. 10 times more powerful than my Audigy 2, and only £100. The list af awards for this product on Creatives website is huge. A must have.

RAM: PC3200 is still the only RAM avaliable on AMD systems, the move over to the uber fast DDR-2 stuff powering new P4's has not graced the AMD market yet. So, stick to premium brands (Corsair, Kingston, OCZ etc) and go for one with CAS latency of 2.5 or lower.

Hard Drives: Most mobo's support RAID on SATA now, so definatly buy SATA drives. No particular brand is better than anyone else here, drives are essentially quite boring. Personal preference is Seagate, but only because I've got them in my current PC... Set up RAID in RAID 0 to see better performance. You'll need 2 drives for this, ideally of equal size and from the same brand. It is advisable to also purchase a small HDD to plug in over USB or Firewire when using Raid 0, just so you can back up the important bits. As I once found out, if one of the 2 drives in your RAID arrary fail, you loose everything...

That would make for a pretty darn good system, weighing in at about £1000 if you buy the bits and build it yourself. I would advise against watercooling tho... Delivers good cooling, but the constant humming noise of the water pump can be more annoying than fans. I also feel a tad un-easy about pumping water thru my PC. Using watercooling also voids any warranty on your hardware.

And finally, graphics card drivers can be found at: www.nvidia.co.uk Your mobo and sound drivers are on here: www.sis.com

Hope that was of some help to someone Smile

/\ Absolute genius /\

This was just the answer I was looking for. Its safe to say that I was aimming on the £900 mark as ive just sold my car (who needs 2 ?) and come into some spare cash. Most went on a new kicthen and what I had leftover was going on a new pc but its payday soon so Ill strecth to another £100 or so. I dont really have prefrance to makes or brands when it comes to pcs. The system I have now was just a quick build to replace one that went up the swany. Ok for the hard drives, would it make any diffrence if I had seprate hardrives for diffrent things i.e
1 for the operating system
1 for programs
1 for pictures, music and movies ect?

And finaly im into my gadgets and things looking good so does anyone know any good websites/supplyers for nice looking cases?
Once again thanks for your help

Ok, your absolute first stop has to be a visit to www.overclockers.co.uk The company are excellent. I have purchased many products from them. You can build your whole Pc there, prices are excellent, and their returns policy is seccond to none Smile They dont sell rubbish neither, only performace parts...

As for your hard drives, I would buy 3, all equal. Install HDD1 all on it's lonesome, and put windows on it. Combine the other 2 to make for a super fast RAID 0 volume and store everything on that. Use the windows HDD just to back up the basics, as the chance of that drive failing are some 50% less than the others. For example:

HDD1: Stores Windows XP, and holds a back up of selective bits of your raid arrary. This could be you're MP3's, Pictures, Videos, Documents and Save Games. Don't back up programs, as they can be recovered from CD if need be.

HDD2 and HDD3: RAID 0 volume. Uber fast baby! Store and install EVERYTHING here (Except Windows) and use it for day to day use. Back up important stuff on the above Smile

Thats what I would do, it gives you security and RAID performance.
