Possible Community Built Game?

#1
There has been a lot of discussion recently of making RCT3 open source, and Ken Allen (formerly a part of Atari, not anymore though) created a poll asking about a possible Open Source game like RCT3.

Ken Allen Wrote:I've been reading many of the threads here lately, and a lot of the peeps posting here have been wondering if Frontier would consider opening the source code for the fans to continue supporting RCT3 with the community.

I can't speak for Frontier (or for Atari any more for that matter), so I can't tell you their plans other than what we already know publicly. And I can tell you that practically no developer will ever release source code to the public. Yes there are rare exceptions, but as a rule, they do not. Source code contains trade secrets, patentable technology, and nullifies the sigificant financial investment expended in creating the game and underlying technology.

But this raises an intriguing question. I, for one, am curious how much interest there would be in creating a game like RCT3, but developed by the community at large as an open-source project (like those projects found in SourceForge.net).

So the question is:

Would you help create a game like RCT3, but one that was open-source?
