Just now discovering RCT

#1
Hello, I am new to the game (I'm playing RCT3 Platinum but I bought all 3 from GOG.com.) I was trying to search this forum a bit but finding it difficult to navigate. I was looking for downloads that don't really fall under the typically available custom content categories for the game. I am overwhelmed by the number of coaster types and flat rides already in the game, and I find the scenery and stall selection to be sufficient, if not quite as diverse and plentiful, or aesthetically pleasing, as the coaster and ride options (also I find the Hershey's product placement rather repugnant,) so I have no real interest in those types of downloads for now. What I would really love to find are some additional clothes, heads, and hairstyles for peeps and more costumes for entertainers. I find it hard to believe that these are not possible and haven't been done somewhere. I'd also check out any AI fixes or similar code enhancements like I often see for other games. I've seen most of these things asked about here and there but not found any actual downloads. Someone mentioned billboard images too, any of those actually around? (I know you can use any image, but if someone had created some nice generic candy, drinks, hot dog, etc. signs, the custom stalls would become great alternatives to the more cartoonish stalls that are shaped like whatever they sell.)

Anyhow, thanks for reading, hello, and I appreciate the patience of anyone offering some answers!

Once you’ve really gotten into a park or two you’ll change your mind about that!

I agree with that. It shouldn’t have come with the game but I guess they never assumed we could invent CS for RCT3 use (and add the product placement ourselves), which could explain why Atari came up with their mystery file extension called .ovl.

I would also like these and other colours for zoo animals. However, our CS creators are working very hard and extremely creatively without pay on their own time and we’ll simply have to wait until it arrives. I’m sure at this very moment someone out there is trying to figure out how it could be done. In the meantime, while I would still like to have these things I’m quite satisfied with what they’ve done so far.

In RCT3 there are cheats (guests that you name with a certain name that enters the game engine as code. There is also something called an options.txt file where you get to put your own codes in (obtained from a list or from a utility).

To the best of my knowledge there are no such thing as billboard images which are available in packs for download. You’ll need to create them yourself or ask a board member to do so.

I agree that some of the in-game stalls border on the ridiculous and the in-game custom stalls are just this side of acceptable. However, there are invisible CS stalls that you can download and then make look like what you want with CS or IGS surrounds. There are also custom counters you can place inside and staff you can place behind them that do not come with counters like they do in the game. With all this great custom stuff around the possibilities for this game are now limitless. And it’s getting better all the time.

Good luck, enjoy yourself enjoying the game and thanks for being with us.

I didn't realize that the secrets to custom scenery and tracks were something the community had to crack open on their own. My impression of the game was that it was built for customization. I have a more accurate perspective on it now, I think. I still look forward to seeing these happen at some point, and if the scenery and tracks lack preview images I will continue to hold off on those, as it seems like finding anything in that sea of stuff would be tough if it all just has a CRT placeholder icon.

I knew about the cheats, I just meant things like bug fixes for AI and routing issues that can be the bane of any game that involves hordes of wandering "people." Code as in programing, not as in cheat codes.

You’re welcome.

I’m sure if Atari could have made more money from the game by including the ability to customize it they would have, but
a. they were more concerned with getting as much of it done as they could while at the same timereleasing the game in plenty of time for 2004’s Christmas shopping, and
b. the fact that they invented their own file extension for in-game data files indicates this was never their intention.

When I first opened some of the custom stuff in the menus I felt the same way. This is a particular problem with a scenery set that’s been written in a language other than English. However, this comes with the territory. Rather than have menus written in English with preview images that might be there at the expense of scenery quality I would rather have all the fabulous scenery created in the way the artist feels best creating it. Creating custom content is a lot of work and by the time the custom artist has gotten through with their set I’m sure all they want to do is make it available for download. Lately though I’ve begun to notice a tendency for the artist to make a note with the first release that the set will be re-released at a future date with the preview images. And if the custom artist doesn’t speak English then that’s my problem.

I have a third-party clip board application that, while I’m scanning through the scenery menus, I use it to take pictures of the scenery I know I’ll want to come back to. If you do this, then the language doesn’t matter. Save enough of these images and you’ll find you need to file them in some order. Having done that I now have my own system that’s tailored to my own needs, doesn’t include items I’m not interested in, has preview images and is in English.

And I have every tree, bush, shrub, hedge, every blade of grass and every sprig of ivy clip-boarded and filed so I can find something I like right away rather than try and remember which set I saw it in six weeks ago.

Then you'd be wanting the RCT3 fixes, otherwise known as patches. If you’ve got Wild! installed don’t bother with any Vanilla or Soaked! patches. Most of the patches come as an .exe file replacement to launch the game. If you’ve got the no CD crack then you can’t use the .exe patch. – or you can get the .exe patch and go back to using CD to launch the game.

Mine is the digital download version from GOG.com, and as such it is fully patched with all official patches (save the last one in this case, which only addresses an issue with the disc version and is therefore unnecessary,) needs no CD inserted, and contains no DRM. I was just asking about unofficial patches, if they existed, and I gather the answer is no.

Thanks again and take care!
