Lighting: An apparatus which creates illumination, such as a lamp fixture, lantern or candle.
Lighting RIG: US Terminology> Professional Jargon = Structural configuration which supports the colored lighting over a stage or other performance area, to illuminate in an appealing manner and create excitement.
This is the structure that supports the lighting for/over the stage. In the real world, the support system can be created in numerous configurations & designs. To "generalize" the name, and because us Americans like to keep it short & sweet, (AKA: Lazy) the term "Lighting Rig" was created.
Being a stage hand & performer in the rock & pop music scene for nearly 35 years, I picked up on a lot of this terminology.
